Five Cultural Events

One Act Play

In February I attended the “Student One Act Play”.  The play had four small plays “Wedding Duet”, “The Whole Shebang”, “What She Found There”, and “The Fifteen Minute Hamlet”.  All four plays included American culture and it’s significant.  Each play included American culture and presenting in humorous.  In the play, two act that relates to great historical pieces, Hamlet and The Bible.  “The Fifteen Minute Hamlet” relates to the novel Hamlet, showing the summary in fifteen minute making it interesting and entertaining.  “The Whole Shebang” shows an ideal of what is the universe about by the Earth is God’s assignment in class and earning a C.  In the play they relate what it says in The Bible, such as God created the Earth in seven days and rest on the eight.  It was interesting to someone else view of the universe.  Many different ideas create the unique culture and literature in the U.S.

Reading and Publication Party

Reading in public was very exiting and hard to do.  I presented because I wanted to A on my essay and to write only one essay instead of two.  After reading my poem I was grad that I read my poem.  I was nerves about reading my personal essay about my lover, but I felt better after I read that I am not hiding anything that I should not.  I am also grad that people were supportive and nice in my poem and my presentation.   They gave me confident in my writing. My writing is not good and the poem is very simple.  However, that is the importance in writings to put my feeling, ideas, and thought into words. It is not about how good of reader you are or how good of a public speaker you are.  The important is to read your work proudly and confident.  I would like to attend to another reading party and present another poem of mine.

Artist Union Gallery

When I perform my poem at the artist union gallery I also viewed people’s art work.  At the gallery, there were many variety of art such as painting, drawing, photo, and sculpting.  My favorite art was the art on the back corner.  The art was very unique and wired; it was drawn of her imagination.  The piece included a person’s face with color full hair, unicorn on top of his head, deck of cared coming out of her face, nice going into her head, tears and joy in her expression.  Art is an imagination drowns out onto a piece a paper.  It is same as poem but it is written.  In out culture art is seen in many places, such as in books, houses, posters.  Out city and country is build out of art.  Art is a significant in our society and culture.

School Play “To Kill in Mockingbird”

This play was at the Buena High school and some of my friend performed.  My sophomore year I read the novel in my English class.  The novel was interesting.  The play showed the visual of the novel different from the reading the words.  Books and novels are made into movies showing someone’s visual.  It was different than my imagination and that made it interesting for me.  I enjoy the play more than reading, because I am more of the visual person than words.  Acting out a novel is fun culture that we have.

Basketball Game

I attended to a basketball game between Buena high school and Ventura high school.  I am a Buena high school student and ruling my friends and against Ventura.  Sport is a great culture in the United States.  Sports bring happiness, sadness, and sweet.  The relationship between Buena and Ventura is ravel.  We fight and talk smack at each other, but at the end of the game we are friend.  Just like brothers and sisters, we fight and we get along.  My favorite sports are basketball and have played ball for years.  Me and my friends get together all the time and play little game of ball.  Basketball entrained people for a long time and spreading across the world.  Basketball is one of the greatest invention that people made and a great cultural event that people can enjoy.

Sticks and Smells by My Feet

Walking down the street, I could feel stickiness under my shoes and I could smell smoke from the ground.  The chewing gum and cigarette butts, which people do not consider as trash, infest the streets, harming animals and producing toxic gases.    Chewing gum which causes harm toward animals and cigarette butts produce toxic gas that cause harm to the environment.  The solutions to reduce gum problem toward a gum chewers, including myself are to throw away gum in trash using a wrap for each gum and to recycle gum.  The solutions toward the cigarette butts are to collect cigarette butts in a container after each use and to find a cigarette trash cans.  However, I, a non smoker, will contribute to solving the cigarette butts problem by volunteering to collect cigarette butts and spreading the words to smokers.  Littering gum and cigarette is started by one person, who is passed on to the next person, causing billions of gum and cigarette butts in the streets.  Because, today gum and cigarette butts infest the streets many people have the idea that gum and cigarette butts are not consider a litter.  Comparing with other litter such as plastic bags and bottles, gum and cigarette butts are small, creating the idea of not causing as much harm when it causes more harm than other litter.

Today chewing gum infests the street and school campuses.  Walking on campus or down town it is more likely to step on gum than not.  Even chewing gum is found indoor under desks, chairs and in the bathrooms.  People do not consider gum as littering, because such a small trash makes people think that it does not cause harm.  In fact the there are many chewing gum that are litter attempts others do the same.  In New York City the city spends over $8,000 on vacuum-cleanerlike machine that blasts gum off sidewalks.  These machines come with more stainless-steel attachments than a door-to-door salesman could ever demonstrate (Barron). Chewing gum removing is a problem costing money and time on a problem that can be solved.  Interviewing the Foothill Technology High School’s janitor Mario, he says “I spend more than two hours scraping gum off on school property every week”.  A company that California based on called Recycle Media Corporation is first international distributor in a five year deal estimated to be worth $26.6 million.  The money that is spent to clean the chewing gum is a waste.  The money could be spent on more beneficial use such as, education, welfare, and supporting the environment.  If people do not have a responsibility to take care of cleaning after their chewing gum should not chew gum.  It is easy for people to spite away gum on the ground than finding a trash can.  Today’s society people value time more than wealth, material and the environment.  It is impossible to convince most of the population to throw gum away.  The solution is to create a situation that will make people throw away.  In my English class at Ventura College, I created an event poster for celebrating Earth Action Day.  The poster collected gum from people by posting many famous people’s picture to stick gum on. The idea first started in London to prevent people from littering chewing gum.  Setting up opportunities where it is convenient and existing to throw away gum.  When people throw away their chewing gum in the trash or stick on the poster which is collected, it saves millions of dollar that is spend in chewing gum removal and creates cleaner cities and protects the environment.

Chewing gums are recyclable.  Gummy Bins’ are small station made in the UK to collect chewing gum and recycle them.  Nigel Bill, Head of Sales at Gummy Bins explains the significance of the deal: “Our chewing gum disposal and recycling system has had impressive results in the UK in 2006, showing an average reduction of 75% or more in chewing gum deposits in the vicinity of the ‘gummy bins’”.  Many countries have already worked on the problem of litter that trashes the city and save money and saves the environment. Chewing gum litter is one of the most difficult forms of litter to remove. The removal cost range between $2 -$3 per piece of gum, and often there are harmful chemicals used.  This cost is easily removed by using Gummy Bins and chewing gum collectors.  The discarded chewing gum can be used in a football area and in an ingredient for a substance underneath play surfaces (Chasin).   Discovery is made to recycle more trash to save the environment. The United States is one of few counties that is not working much to save resources, money, waste, and the environment.  The chewing gum companies are doing less work to reduce chewing gum litter.  By contributing effort to the Recycle Media and throwing away chewing gum can change the city and save the enlivenment.

Cigarette butts litter almost every public institution from government lobbies to parks; even in public high schools like Buena and Ventura, cigarette butts can be found in bathrooms and even sports tracks are not immune to the cover of cancer causing ashes of a Marlboro. Cigarette butt litter is the world’s greatest environmental litter problem. In the article “Fighting pollution is everyone’s responsibility”, the author argues that the world annually discards about 4.3 trillion cigarette butts creating over 500,000 tons of pollution per year which cause global warming and heart attacks.  Cigarette butts cause harm to the environment, and will damage people’s lungs.  Cigarette butts can not be thrown away in a normal trash can because they can start a fire.  They must be thrown away in a proper trash can that will produce less toxic gas and harm.  However, trash cans for cigarette butts are not found in many places.  Many non smoking areas and near non smoking areas have many cigarette butts thrown in the streets.  Cigarette smokers are addicted and most can not survive without a smoke for about two to five hours, causing many smokers to smoke outside area or in the bathrooms producing trash.  In the cities there are not many cigarette trash cans.  Lots of cigarette butts end up in birds, fishes, dogs, and cats stomachs causing diseases and death.

Today small handy cigarettes butt collectors are made and sold.  Many throw away their cigarette butts because it is easier to throw them in the ground and it is small that it does not stand out much as other trash. In developed countries (or in markets where indoor smoking bans have been introduced) almost one in three cigarette butts ends up as litter and it can take up to 12 years for a cigarette butt to break down (McLaren).  People do not realize what cigarette butts are causing to the environment and to people.  The solution is similar to chewing gum, to bring trash cans to smokers, because no one can bring the smokers to the trash can.  Most smokers are un-responsible for their own health and un-responsible for their action in cleaning up their mess. Another solution is to volunteer picking up cigarette butts.  Picking cigarette butts are not easy, but after an hour the trash bag is full of cigarette butts.  It is not only a cigarette smoker problem, it is everyone problem.  We must act to clean the cigarette butts before it becomes more damaging.

Both chewing gum and cigarettes are large problems that are easily solved. They are caused by people’s un-responsibility by not taking care of their mess.  The community should start considering gum and cigarette butts as litter.  People litter because they think it is ok, is not going to affect much in the environment and in the society and there are no consequences.  Recycling and throwing away gum and cigarette is an easy way to save the environment compared to saving gas and resources.  The solutions to prevent gum and cigarette butts are to create situation that will make people throw them away and to volunteer to clean up the community.  Cities can change by cleaning up the chewing gum and cigarette butts to make a better place where people live happier and save the environment.

Let my people go surfing

I finishied the book on time.  Let my people go surfing was not exiting or enjoying.  Most of the book talked about his life and the campany Patagonia that he is proud of.  His life story is exting but it is too long.  the picture helped me keep on track and intertain more.  Yvon talks about good point about the patagonia.  They have interest fact and bussnes style you do not usualy see in other company.

What can I do water pollution?

Human society affect the water and water creatures.  Some of the solution limited amount of dumping into to the sea, river, and lake.  to have less ship cruzing near natural area and protecting movement for seals and penguens.

Let my people go surfing

The book starts with Yvon’s history.  The story begins when he is a young kid.  He was interest in nature and environment since he was young.  Though high school and college, he enjoyed the life climbing and interacting with the environment.  Climbing was everything to him.  He had a thought of society is just a distraction in life.  After getting drafted to the army and sent to Vietnam, he learn to build tools and gear for climbing.  He started a business selling and making climbing kits.  However, he was not interested in the business at all.  The only reason he started the business was so he could make some money to climb.  He been to many mountains across nation.  His climbing started to bring interest to other climber.  A fourteen page essay on clean climbing by Sierra climber Doug Robinson wrote a powerful paragraph “there is a word for it, and the word is clean. climbing with only nuts and runners for protection is clean climbing.  Climber come and leave without changes in rock and mountains.  I think it is important to enjoy and take care of the environment.

Into The Wild Review

The movie was interesting.  He had a dream and a goal.  He fallowed his own brave to go into the wild away from the society.  What he did is brave.  But I do not know it is good? is that what should we do?  The experience he had is amazing.  Seeing different places, meeting different people and learning how to service without technology and the society.  Living and succeeding in this society is our destiny.  We were born and grow up in the human society.  People build this world thousand and thousands of years.  I will not run away from what I am living in to find a better place.  And I want to live and success in the place I live.

Chouinard

I was really easy to read his peace.  He expressed the sitting, emotions and his own experience well.  His peace was not my type that I will be interest in.  I like peaces that gives many points that makes the reader wonder and think about it.  It seems like he was just telling to us and not make us think about much as he should of.  I think I would enjoy his peace if we twisted his thought or something that would make the reader or my mind twisted, but still on track.  His peace is too formal.  I enjoy thing books and other media that jumps me suprises me a little bit.

Spring Break

I did not have a spring break this week.  My high school spring break is not until next week so I was busy all week.  But last weekend me and my friends about 10 of us decided to go play soccer.  We all gathered at the new community park on Kimball and Telephone.  However, all the field where taken by soccer teams.  We decided to move to another field where we could use.  After driving around ventura we found about 3 field and 5 parks.  I was surprised with how many parks and field where used by other people.  We tried to go to the buena high school but they locked to soccer goals down.   We found one near the hospital, I can not remember what was the school called.  We enjoyed playing soccer for about three hour, boys and girls mix and ages from 15 to 21.

This weekend was very hot.  The temperature gone up over 80 f.  Globule Warming is effecting ventura.  I would like to keep ventura nice and cool was it was before.  We should start considering about Globule Warming not in the world but in the city and in personal.

Santa Rosa

She describe the love of her island well.  The imagery was used well to make us reader feel like we are in Santa Rosa island.  I have read many love story.  Some are about loved one, love to a food and love place.  Her essay made a large impact on me.  I started to think where is my love place and how can I make a better place.

Essay Questions

My topic is recycling and I address toward shortage of energy, natural resource, and economic development.

The solution is support and help act on recycling, do not throw away what could be recyclable.

My experience is taking out the recycling can to the curve everyday.  How I could see my work toward recycling that I started.

In my essay I will use data to support my opinion.  I will view my audience not what recycling is, but how can you help the Earth and the environment.

My audience are families, businesses and educators.
